PowerPoint from Class: Action Potential PowerPoint

FOR HOMEWORK:

Watch this video:

The Action Potential
Note: there is an error in this video. The video states that the return to resting potential is due to sodium and potassium leak channels, but it is actually restored to resting potential by the sodium/potassium pump.

Complete the Action Potential Graph worksheet.

In your journal:
1) a labelled diagram of an axomembrane at resting potential
2) a descriptive flow chart outlining the steps of an action potential.

Biology 12H

March 8, 10 & 29th

Inquiry Assignment Options (choose one of the following 2 options):

  1. Create a question about the human body you can investigate by designing and implementing an experiment. Create a formal report. This can be done individually, in pairs or in groups of 3.
  2. Choose a case study from the following site and complete the research, questions and analysis of the case. Create a science poster explaining/discussing the case and your findings. This can be done individually, in pairs or in groups of 3.
Before you start: Approval Process

Option 1: Before you start your experiment, you must have your question and experimental design approved. Some questions are unable to be investigated in a high school setting. You can use your own body (or the bodies of other students), but all procedures must be safe and ingestion of materials is not recommended. Please choose wisely considering the materials we have available.

Option 2: Before you start your case study, you must get your choice approved. Some case studies are designed for university students in graduate programs - these will be very difficult for us to tackle. Please try and choose a study that is designed for senior high school or 1st/2nd year undergraduate students.

FOR HOMEWORK:

Watch Synaptic Transmission animation. Click on "Synaptic Transmission" in the top left hand corner and watch the short animation. Note: there is no sound.

Label Synapse Diagram.

Ensure that your journal pages on the Action Potential are complete. Please see sample journal in class. Your journal should include:

1) a labelled diagram of an axomembrane at resting potential
2) a descriptive flow chart outlining the steps of an action potential.
3) the completed Action Potential Graph worksheet
4) an answer to the self-reflective question "How similar was your predicted graph to the actual graph?"
